Wheelchair in Munich
At ergonomic care in Munich, we look back on many years of experience in the field of wheelchair provision. In cooperation with our partner companies, mobility and comfort of the patient are our top priorities. Therefore, detailed consultation about the right wheelchair for you is particularly important to us. In this context, we want to clarify three important points. Firstly, the question of where the wheelchair will be used, whether inside the home, outdoors, and for which distances and activities. Secondly, what requirements are necessary for the wheelchair and whether special accessories are needed. And finally, what adjustment options and measurements the wheelchair should have. Whether a lightweight wheelchair, active wheelchair or nursing wheelchair, we will find the right model for you together.

The wheelchair assortment at ergonomic care Munich
Depending on the requirements and application area, different types of wheelchairs are suitable. These include standard and lightweight wheelchairs, nursing wheelchairs, or adaptive wheelchairs.

Standard Wheelchair and Lightweight Wheelchair
A standard wheelchair or lightweight wheelchair, due to its limited adjustment options, is generally not intended for permanent use. Since lightweight wheelchairs are foldable and easy to store, we often recommend them for transport or for use within the home. The difference between a standard and a lightweight wheelchair, as the name suggests, is the frame material and therefore the weight. The wheelchairs of this type available from us are standardly made from aluminum, thus they are lightweight wheelchairs. If a lot of time is spent in a lightweight wheelchair, it is also important to choose a suitable seat cushion.
Active Wheelchair and Adaptive Wheelchair
The active wheelchair, unlike the lightweight wheelchair, is very suitable for permanent use. One reason for this is that the wheelchair can be individually adjusted to the rider through many adjustable parts, hence the name adaptive wheelchair. The goal of an active wheelchair is to maximize the mobility of the user in everyday life, sports, and professional life. Thus, sports wheelchairs and children’s wheelchairs also fall into this category. In addition to individual customization, an adaptive wheelchair also offers the option to design and color according to preference.

Nursing Wheelchair
If a patient’s needs require special equipment or seating positions, a nursing wheelchair is used. Compared to a lightweight or active wheelchair, nursing wheelchairs are generally less maneuverable. However, they offer specifically suitable options for caregiving, such as trunk or head supports, and individual seat positioning adjustments. Additionally, the nursing wheelchair can be equipped with a therapy table. Thus, it is often referred to as a multifunctional wheelchair.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which wheelchairs does health insurance pay for?
In principle, health insurance covers the costs for every type of wheelchair, as long as it “ensures the success of medical treatment, prevents an impending disability, or compensates for a disability” (SGB V §33). This means that the wheelchair provision should be adapted to the needs of the patient, but not over-served.
When do I get a wheelchair from health insurance?
Anyone who is permanently or temporarily reliant on a wheelchair generally has a right to one. Causes can include a disease, an accident, or an injury. All you need is a prescription from the doctor, ideally noting the special requirements of the wheelchair.
Which doctor can prescribe a wheelchair?
A wheelchair can be prescribed by your general practitioner as well as by specialized doctors, such as neurologists or orthopedists.
How wide is a standard wheelchair?
The seat width of a wheelchair is directly related to the dimensions of the wheelchair user. This question often comes up in connection with doorway widths, for which one can generally say that a standard wheelchair usually measures less than 70 cm in total width. Considering the necessary space for the hands when pushing the wheelchair, a door width of 90 cm is sensible.
How long is a prescription for a wheelchair valid?
Like other aids, a prescription for wheelchairs is valid for 30 days from the date issued by the doctor. If your prescription has exceeded this period, please contact your doctor to issue a new one.
How often am I entitled to a new wheelchair?
As a rule, you are entitled to a new wheelchair every five years. However, there are some exceptions that justify an earlier claim. For example, the user may outgrow the wheelchair, which is often the case with children, or the wheelchair may no longer be sufficient for the individual needs due to a progressing disease.
Who owns a wheelchair?
If you buy your wheelchair privately, it naturally belongs to you. More often, however, a doctor prescribes a wheelchair followed by cost coverage by health insurance. In this case, the wheelchair is the property of the health insurance and thus to be treated as a loan.
Where can I rent a wheelchair?
At our medical supply store ergonomic care, you also have the option to rent wheelchairs on a daily basis. If you need a wheelchair due to repairs on your own wheelchair or for other short-term reasons, please come to our Sendlinger Tor branch and ask about a rental wheelchair.
