Pelvic prostheses – well provided for with Ergonomic Care
The amputation of a leg at the hip can pose a special challenge and often requires special craftsmanship from our technicians. In the case of hip disarticulation, control of the prosthesis is exclusively through the pelvis. This often places higher demands on the measurement procedures and fitting processes. For our customers, this is not always easy, but at Ergonomic Care, we stand by their side not only with our many years of expertise and technical know-how but also support them with empathy and patience during the acclimatization process.
The goal of our work in our Munich workshop is always the best possible combination of functionality, durability, and reliability. This means that we pay particular attention during the fitting process to avoiding pain or chafing by using robust yet flexible materials. At the same time, a prosthesis should enable the wearer to lead the independent and active life they desire. And we do not neglect the question of appearance, i.e., the cosmetic aspect, either.
Pelvic prostheses – the best care for an independent life
Amputations at the hip area can vary greatly, depending on whether the cause is a disease or an accident. Accordingly, the requirements for pelvic and hip prostheses are individually tailored, as they replace not only the hip joint but also legs or halves of the pelvis. A prosthesis is not just a prosthesis. Many factors play a role in fit, appearance, and functionality: the load-bearing capacity of the stump, activity, weight, and age of the patients, and much more. Not only appearance and functionality are adjusted to these factors, but also the selection and processing of the materials.
Functions and materials of the pelvic prostheses
Pelvic or hip prostheses consist of various components that are usually made from modern materials such as silicone and carbon. The main components include:
- Pelvic shaft system:
In the upper part of the prosthesis, the pelvis is embedded in the so-called pelvic shaft, which connects the prosthesis with the body. This is usually made of silicone. Measurement and adjustment are particularly important here, as the shaft should not only cause as few problems as possible but also determines the functionality, durability, and comfort of the entire prosthesis. There are therefore also different designs of the pelvic shaft, such as optionally a two-part pelvic shaft or a pelvic basket. - Prosthetic parts:
In addition to the pelvic shaft, the leg prosthesis itself is also important. The selection and adjustment of the hip and knee joints determine the stability as well as the functionality or mobility. Active, sporty, or young people have different demands than seniors. Carbon is often used for prosthetic parts and joints.
Our task at Ergonomic Care is to meet these demands as much as possible through the right adjustment and choice of fitting parts. For this, we work with renowned joint manufacturers (e.g., Ottobock). The appearance or cosmetics of the prosthesis is also increasingly important for many customers. Together with our customers, we try to find the best solution for all demands.
Modern pelvic prostheses perform numerous functions and must also contribute to the user’s safety. Therefore, joint functions are increasingly supported by electronic components and microprocessors. They assist in sitting down, standing up, and standing, detect fall hazards and ramps. With apps, patients can make adjustments to the joints themselves and, for example, activate bicycle or ergometer functions. We at Ergonomic Care in Munich naturally provide extensive advice on all possibilities and functions of your pelvic prosthesis. Together, we master the fitting process and ensure a secure feeling in handling the prosthesis.
The appropriate hip/pelvic prosthesis – the process at Ergonomic Care
When purchasing and fitting hip prostheses, many details must be considered. The following overview of the process therefore only roughly indicates what to expect and can vary individually.

Free consultation and measurement at our branch at Sendlinger Tor
At the beginning of the process, there is first a detailed consultation. Our technicians show you various options for care, possible functions, and appearance. Together with you, we discuss what the prosthesis should ideally do for you. In doing so, we draw on years of experience as well as new knowledge from numerous training sessions. Of course, we work together with therapists, doctors, and – if desired – relatives throughout the fitting process.
2
First modeling and tests
In further steps, precise measurements and assessments will be made to ensure the correct length, size, and comfort of the prosthesis. Our technicians work with high precision and modern measuring devices to avoid future problems. In our workshop, an initial version of the prosthesis is then manufactured, which is extensively tested. Especially when a prosthesis is worn for the first time, a detailed fitting process – supported by therapists – is to be planned.
3
Pickup and final tests
Throughout the fitting process, our technicians make various adjustments until finally, the optimal prosthesis can be handed over. Even after that, our customers can always come to our Munich workshop at Sendlinger Tor with adjustment requests or questions. We also provide you with care tips to ensure that your prosthesis can fulfill its purpose for as long as possible.

After my accident 5 years ago I have been supplied with several prosthetics from different orthopaedic technical supply stores. Here at ergonomic care it is the first time I am 100% satisfied with my prosthetic.
I have been advised by a very competent employee in order to find the most suitable combination of knee joint with the prosthetic socket.
Now I have been supplied with a Ottobock C-leg and a custom fitted socket with a silicon pin liner.
My gait pattern improved significantly and I am now able to walk stairs and even far distances for a long time.
I can definitely recommend the medical supply store to anyone who is looking for a long lasting custom fit supply.
