Knee Prostheses - Getting Started with High Tech from a Specialist

When we at Ergonomic Care talk about knee prostheses, we do not mean artificial knee joints as endoprostheses that are surgically replaced or inserted in clinics, but rather leg prostheses with a knee joint when an amputation has been necessary above or at the level of the knee. Therefore, they are referred to as transfemoral prostheses or knee disarticulation prostheses, or Knee-Ex-Prosthesis.

In the field of Knee-Ex-Prostheses, there have been many developments in recent years, ranging from a wide variety of standard models to electronic high-tech models. Important aspects of a suitable knee prosthesis are not only functionality and mobility. Preventing falls and a high level of stability are also crucial aspects in the manufacturing and fitting of Knee-Ex-Prostheses.

A crucial role is played by choosing the right components, the correct fit, as well as the specific activities and lifestyle habits of our customers. The making of knee prostheses is therefore very individual and requires a lot of craftsmanship as well as technical know-how by our Ergonomic Care staff. They create prostheses in our workshop with a lot of experience, knowledge, but also patience and empathy, enabling our customers to lead an active and independent life – and we are proud of that.

Knee-Ex-Prostheses from Ergonomic Care – as Individual as Their Wearers

When building and adapting leg and knee prostheses, it is about taking into account the anatomical conditions of the patient and ensuring that the prosthesis fits perfectly and offers maximum functionality. At the same time, it must contribute a lot to the stability and gait security of the patient, which especially increases the biomechanical requirements. It must not be forgotten that a knee prosthesis usually has to replace two joints, the knee and the ankle joint. Bending and not bending must be precisely controlled. Today, this is increasingly achieved through electronic control. There are many functions and parameters that need to be considered for a Knee-Ex-Prosthesis.

An important step in the construction and adaptation of Knee-Ex-Prostheses is therefore choosing the right components. There are different types of prostheses suitable for various activities and needs. For example, there are prostheses for sporting activities, everyday activities, or occupational activities. Our staff advise our patients on which prosthesis is best suited for them and which components are best tailored to their needs. In addition to modern components such as carbon or plastic, electronic components are increasingly and more frequently used in Knee-Ex-Prostheses, which can even be partly controlled via smartphone. The prosthetic shaft also offers different solutions, such as soft wall inner funnels, silicone liners, clamping shafts, or a PBSS shaft. The optimal solution always depends on the patient.
Essentially, a Knee-Ex-Prosthesis consists of the following components:

  • Shaft system
  • Knee joint
  • Foot
  • Lower leg with varying cosmetics

The adaptation of the prosthesis to the anatomical conditions of the patient is carried out by our staff in our in-house workshop at Sendlinger Tor. It ensures that the prosthesis fits perfectly and provides maximum functionality. By adapting the prosthesis to the specific activities of the patient taking into account the individual criteria of the amputation stump and the use of modern technologies such as sensors and motors, the quality of life of the patient can be greatly improved. As one of the most important contacts for prostheses in Munich and surrounding areas, ongoing training and further education of our orthopedic technicians is especially important to us at Ergonomic Care, as we want to offer our customers the best possible care.

Knee Prostheses from Ergonomic Care – The Process

1

The Consultation

At the first (free) consultation, we discuss previous illnesses and complaints in the anamnesis. And of course, wishes for the new prosthesis. A first examination of the stump provides further insights and the ranges of motion are also measured. This can be done at your home or in a (rehabilitation) clinic if necessary, and always in cooperation with doctors and therapists.

Modeling and Fabrication of the Prosthesis

In further steps, not only measurements are taken on the stump and a plaster cast is made, but also an initial test shaft is created. This is tested together with you until the optimal fit is found. Only then is the final prosthesis made.

3

Picking up the Prosthesis

When picking up the final prosthesis, we perform final checks and, if necessary, adjustments. From now on, the period of training begins, as especially handling knee prostheses and their electronics requires some practice. Although this is usually done together with therapists, we naturally support our customers throughout this phase. You can also have adjustments made in our workshop at any time later on – our Ergonomic Care guarantee ensures this.

After my accident 5 years ago I have been supplied with several prosthetics from different orthopaedic technical supply stores. Here at ergonomic care it is the first time I am 100% satisfied with my prosthetic.
I have been advised by a very competent employee in order to find the most suitable combination of knee joint with the prosthetic socket.
Now I have been supplied with a Ottobock C-leg and a custom fitted socket with a silicon pin liner.
My gait pattern improved significantly and I am now able to walk stairs and even far distances for a long time.
I can definitely recommend the medical supply store to anyone who is looking for a long lasting custom fit supply.
