Frequently Asked Questions
What types of compression stockings are there?
Medical compression stockings are available as calf stockings (AD), knee-high stockings (AF), thigh-high stockings (AG), and also as pantyhose for both genders (AT).
Furthermore, there are maternity pantyhose for expectant mothers (AT/U)
It is important to mention that the pantyhose do not have compression in the body part. Thus, expectant mothers can be comfortably accommodated throughout the pregnancy, as the maternity pantyhose grows with the baby bump
Where can I get custom-made compression stockings / Buy?
In the medical supply store of your choice, a consultant will measure your “stockings”. Flat knit compression garments are usually custom-made, as each edema is located differently and the anatomical conditions of the “lymph extremities” are difficult
Do I need an appointment for measurement?
At ergonomic care, you do not need an appointment. You can come by any time to be measured. Our consultants are looking forward to advising you. However, it is advantageous if you come in the morning for measurements, as the legs are not so swollen then.
If you have any questions, you can reach us by phone at any time. How long is my prescription valid?
Normally, a health insurance prescription is valid for up to 28 days at most health insurance companies. If you are not sure, please feel free to contact us.
When are medical compression stockings necessary?
Those suffering from a venous or lymphatic disease wear medical compression stockings for treatment. These diseases include, for example, varicose veins, thrombosis,
lymphedema, and phlebitisHow long per day and how often should I wear my medical compression stockings?
For optimal therapy success, you should wear your medical compression stockings daily and wash them. Patients with venous disorders and chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) wear their medical compression stockings from morning to evening, for a lifetime. This also applies to patients with lymphedema and lipedema.
In case of acute complaints, for example, phlebitis, or after a vein surgery (varicose vein removal, varicose vein sclerotherapy), compression therapy should also be initiated. The duration of therapy is individually determined by your treating doctor.
What do medical compression stockings cost?
The doctor can prescribe you medical compression stockings (twice a year) if there is a corresponding indication. You will pay a (small) part of the costs yourself.
Compression stockings are subject to the statutory co-payment. If there is no exemption, the co-payment must be made directly at the medical supply store or pharmacy. It amounts to 10 percent of the costs – at least 5 euros and no more than 10 euros per aid. For a premium supply, up to 30 euros extra may be incurred. After the consultation, if you choose a preferred model (e.g., of a specific manufacturer or with a specific color), the medical supply store/pharmacy will inform you about the amount of additional payment.
The additional costs can vary depending on the medical supply store. If you desire a specific compression supply, we recommend that you inquire about the additional costs at various medical supply stores/pharmacies.
How long do compression stockings last?
According to the manufacturer, compression stockings last about half a year with regular use. Then, if necessary, you should get new ones prescribed.
With proper handling and care, according to the manufacturer, the compression effect diminishes after about six months of daily use.
What are the compression classes?
There are four compression classes. Experts also refer to them as CCL 1 to 4: The higher the class, the stronger the compression: This is the pressure exerted by the medical compression stocking. The doctor prescribes the compression class on the prescription for medical compression stockings.
How often a year do I get medical compression stockings on prescription?
Statutory health insurance always covers two pairs of compression stockings or compression tights per year. They cover most of the costs. With daily wearing and washing, the compression pressure gradually decreases. Therefore, there is the possibility to receive a new pair of compression stockings – the so-called “resupply” – every six months. Your doctor can prescribe these for you if medically necessary.
When do you choose round-knit or flat-knit compression stockings?
For the treatment of venous diseases, compression stockings are produced using the circular knitting process and thus resemble conventional stockings. However, lymph patients with edema are treated with flat-knit compression stockings. But what exactly is the difference?
While round-knit stockings are seamless and spirally produced, flat-knit compression stockings have a seam and can thus exert a high, flat pressure on the leg using robust materials. Unlike round-knit, flat-knit stockings are suitable for treating larger circumferences and difficult anatomical conditions, as they have less elasticity and hold the edema together like a wall.
